Undefined time of intuition
The moments are seized in the incessant course of time as secret questions are asked of the one who looks silently on the rendition of the fusion of two bodies, the tensions and the resolutions throughout our last gaze on this knowledge that would forever belong to others. This aspect that we capture also comes from those whom we recognize and it has already escaped us and fallen into the oblivion but risen again in this instant of pure reality in which those questions will forever remain unanswered.
Shen Wei travels through this vast motionless world that is nevertheless realistically surveyed. In the wake of his fortuitous encounters, he seizes the opportunity to know what constitutes our humanity. His way of fragility and uncertainty found in his photographs creates moments in which he holds evidences of an existential quest that will always end up finding us.
Born in 1976 and raised in Shanghai, Shen Wei is a visual artist based in New York City and Shanghai. He is known for his intimate portraits of others and himself, as well as his poetic landscape and still-life photography. His work has been exhibited internationally, with venues including the Museum of the City of New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Power Station of Art in Shanghai, La Triennale di Milano, the North Carolina Museum of Art, and the Moscow Museum of Modern Art. His work has been featured in The New Yorker, The Guardian, CNN, Aperture, ARTnews, American Photo, China Photo Press, and Financial Times.
Shen Wei’s work is included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Photography, the Library of Congress, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Museum of Chinese in America, and the Ringling Museum of Art, among others.
Shen Wei is a recipient of the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center Arts Residency, the Asian Cultural Council Arts & Religion Fellowship, the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Arts Grant. He holds an MFA in photography, video, and related media from the School of Visual Arts, New York; and a BFA in photography from Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
